Man held for raping niece

Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district police have arrested a 31-year-old man, for allegedly sexually assaulting and impregnating his 17-year-old niece. Police said that the survivor had discontinued studies after class IX, and for three years, had been staying with her uncle and aunt, and looking after their five children.
The incident of sexual exploitation within the family, came to light when a ASHA worker visited the village, and noticed the survivor’s baby bump. On probing, she said that in February, one night, when all at home were asleep, she was sexually assaulted by the accused in the drawing room. The accused had threatened her, not to reveal about the incident to anyone, and that if she did, she would have to leave the house. Fearing her uncle, the survivor never told anyone anything. It is learnt that the accused sexually assaulted the girl at least five times. The ASHA worker conducted a pregnancy test, and found that the girl was pregnant. A case has been registered under various provisions of the Pocso Act, and various sections of the IPC.
Man arrested after 22 years
The Mangaluru South police arrested an accused in connection with the theft of an Ambassador car, after 22 years. A car theft case was booked against Aslam alias Aslam Pasha, in November 1997.
Police said that a chargesheet was also filed before a court. Since February 8, 2000, the accused was not appearing before the court, and on May 7, 2015, the case was converted into a long-pending case. The address mentioned was Peenya, Bengaluru. However, head constable Puttarama and police constable Ravi Kumar, picked up the accused from Arenahalli in Periyapatna on Monday. The accused was produced before a court.
