ROORKEE: A senior professor from the chemistry department of IIT-Roorkee was found dead at his flat in the campus on Monday evening. The 63-year-old professor, Kailash Chandra Gupta, was single and lived alone in his flat within the institute.
Gupta hailed from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, Gupta, who used to live in Hill View Apartments of the institute, had not been spotted for over five days at the department or anywhere in the campus. On Monday, around 6pm, one of his neighbours, also a professor, noticed a foul smell emanating from his flat.
After the cops arrived, the door of his flat had to be broken as it was locked from inside. Gupta's semi-decomposed body was found on a chair. Police did not find any suicide note at the spot. "We have completed inquest proceedings in the matter, but the autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday, as his relatives are yet to arrive," said Devendra Singh Chauhan, in-charge, Civil Lines police station.
