Chandigarh: The farmer unionists’ talks with
Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Monday ended on a positive note, since the government has agreed to look for a via media to help them have ownership rights of the land leased to them for decades.
The farmers have withdrawn their call for further agitation, while Khattar has promised to get the individual cases examined and even bring a legislation to help the farmers.
Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Sangh president Suresh Koth said: “Till that time, all the notices served to farmers on August 18 stand suspended, so these were fruitful talks and, thuse, we are hopeful of other solutions at the earliest. Joginder Singh Ugrahan was among more than a dozen unionists behind this cause.”
The meeting happened after the farmers’ standoff with Haryana and Chandigarh police on Monday for blocking an attempt to cordon the chief minister’s residence.
Hundreds of farmers had earlier protested outside the homes of deputy commissioners and legislators before gathering at Gurudwara Nada Sahib in Panchkula and marching towards Chandigarh. Heavy barricading stopped them at the Panchkula border.
They breached the cordon but Panchkula DC Mahavir Kaushik managed to pacify them. The farmers then formed a team for going to the CM for talks.
