TN man aged 75 gets jail term for sexually assaulting, impregnating minor girl

VELLORE: A special court handling cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012, sentenced a 75-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl and impregnating her near Ranipet in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. The girl gave birth to a baby boy in May last year.
Vellore special court sessions judge C Kalaiponni also sentenced him to three years imprisonment on charges of kidnapping the girl.
According to the prosecution, the man identified as A Anwar Basha, a metal utensils trader, enticed the minor girl by offering her sweets and snacks and kidnapped her to secluded locations in the region and sexually assaulted her on several occasions.
The issue came to light when the girl to her mother complained of a severe stomach pain. The mother took her to hospital for treatment. The doctor on duty examined her and declared that she was pregnant. The girl told her mother that Basha had sexually assaulted her several times.
Her mother lodged a complaint with Ranipet all-woman police. The police booked him under sections 5 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault), 5 (l) (whoever commits penetrative sexual assault on the child more than once or repeatedly), 5 (j) (whoever commits penetrative sexual assault on a child), 5 (j) (ii) (makes the child pregnant as a consequence of sexual assault) and 6 of the Pocso Act and Section 366 (procuration of minor girl) of Indian Penal Code and arrested him in May last year.
