JAIPUR: To make the four upcoming underpasses in the city aesthetically beautiful, officials of the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) are trying to procure plants that look beautiful and can grow indoors. “Unlike underpasses located in several other cities, we want the upcoming underpasses aesthetically beautiful. For this, we will build green medians in the middle of these underpasses. However, since no sunlight would be available, we are procuring indoor plants like creepers,” Ashok Choudhary, director engineering, JDA, told TOI.
As a part of the Signal Free Traffic project, JDA is constructing underpasses at four important intersections.
Four underpasses are under construction at OTS Circle, Jawahar Circle, B2 Bypass Circle and at the Laxmi Mandir Tiraha. It is expected to get completed by June. In the second phase, three more underpasses will be constructed at JDA Circle, Rambagh Circle and Chomu House Circle.
JDA officials said all these seven underpasses won’t be meant for vehicles only. Even pedestrians would be allowed.
“If you only allow vehicles, then chances are high that cleanliness drives on these underpasses would be neglected. We have decided to allow pedestrians also. During summer, it would be convenient for pedestrians to walk or sit and relax in these underpasses as these would be comparatively cooler,” a senior JDA official explained.
JDA is planning to set up benches, build hangout zones and install fountains, gates and even sculptures at these underpasses. JDA has plans to install statues of eight freedom fighters including Vallabhbhai Patel, Sarojini Naidu, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, Subhash Chandra Bose and Abdul Ghaffar Khan at these underpasses.
