Guwahati: A fake job racket was busted in Guwahati on Sunday night and seven suspected brokers were arrested by the police on Monday afternoon after interrogation, police said. Three others, suspected to be the mastermind of the racket, are on the run.
The arrested have been identified as Nayan Saikia of Kahilipara in Guwahati, Sirajul Hoque of Mangaldai in Darrang district, Jayanta Das of Goalpara, Jayanta Deka of Basistha in Guwahati and Gobinda Choudhury, Nur Islam Ahmed and Pranjal Barman of Nalbari district.
“We detained them on Sunday night from a lodge located in the Borbari area of the city under the jurisdiction of Dispur police station. About 10 fake blank appointment letters and a few duplicate government seals of various departments, including the irrigation department, have been seized from their possession. The matter of monetary transactions between them is under investigation. We have seized the bank passbooks of the arrested persons,” deputy commissioner of police (East), Guwahati, Sudhakar Singh said.
The DCP said the alleged brokers had been taking shelter in the lodge for the last 15 days. “The lodge authorities had no idea what they were doing. They had booked two rooms and were running the racket,” he added. A local court here in Guwahati on Monday sent Jayanta Das, Sirajul Hoque and Pranjal Barman to 3-day police custody and sent the rest to 4-day judicial custody.
Singh added that any government official found to be linked with the racket will also be arrested. “The planning and other aspects of the racket will come to light once the absconders are arrested. A search for them is on,” he said.
