Rs 655 crore drugs seized in last one year: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also holds the home portfolio, in a reply to a question by BJP MLA Terash Gowalla, informed the assembly that drugs worth over Rs 655 crore have been seized and more than 4,000 people connected with drugs dealings have been arrested in the state in the last one year
“We are working on three approaches — cutting the supply, stopping the demand and minimising the (health) damage. The police are also taking necessary actions against the drug peddlers,” Sarma said.
The seized drugs include 98.65kg of heroin, 32,293.71kg of ganja, 187.05kg of opium, 2,68,104 cough syrup bottles, 48,41,842 capsules, 4.91kg of morphine, 14.7kg of crystal methamphetamine, 0.31kg of cocaine and 213.94kg of bhang.
Sarma said the market value of these drugs would be around Rs 655.40 crore.
Evicted
Over 4,000 families across the state squatting on government lands have been evicted since the present BJP-led government was sworn-in in May last year, Sarma informed the assembly.
In a written reply to a question by Sherman Ali Ahmed, the chief minister said the government has not carried out any investigation to ascertain the citizenship of the members of the 4,449 evicted families.
