Noida: A 19-year-old girl committed suicide on Saturday by jumping off the 11th floor of an under-construction building in Sector 96, some 500 metres from her house in Sadarpur village, a day after a heated argument with her mother and relatives over the latter wanting her to get married. To save her, her 16-year-old sister jumped after her, but her fall was cut short by the iron grille on the ninth floor. Cops, who took the girls to the hospital, said the younger one repeatedly said — “I couldn't save didi” — on the way. Though she has suffered multiple fractures, she is now stable, police said.
Police received a call about theincident around 5 am. “A team rushed to the spot and found a girl in a pool of blood on the floor. The other had multiple wounds, including on her face. Cops rushed them to the hospital, where Nikki (19) was declared ‘brought dead’ while Pallavi (16) got referred to Safdarjung Hospital,” ACP Rajneesh Verma said.
On Monday, the girl’s mother, Sudha, told TOI that the three had dinner together on Friday and talked about Nikki's marriage. “It was a normal conversation as Nikki wasn't doing anything. I just wanted her to settle down. No one was forcing her to get married,” she said.
Around 2 am on Saturday, the mother woke up and found the two missing from their beds. “I immediately alerted relatives and started looking for them. Never did I think I'll find them in such a condition. Now, I am praying that Pallavi recovers quickly. I have already lost Nikki. My husband also died a few years ago,” Sudha, who works as a Grade 4 employee at a private firm, said.
ACP Verma said that during the investigation, cops found that Pallavi, saved from the fall after getting caught on the iron grille on the ninth floor, took the stairs to reach the ground floor. The guards saw her and informed the police about the incident.
“The guards also told us that she kept saying she couldn't save her sister. Looking at the crime scene, it appears that the two left the house around 2 am, reached the building and talked. The older one must have jumped off all of a sudden. Pallavi tried to save her and got pulled along. Then she got stuck on the grille,” Verma said.
Police said they have not been able to record Pallavi's statement yet. She studies in Class 9 in a Delhi school. “Once she is in a condition to speak, we shall record her statement. The hospital authorities have stated that Pallavi has multiple fractures, including some on her face. But she is stable now,” Verma said.
