HYDERABAD: Asia's second largest banyan tree, and also the oldest one in the state, situated in Mahbubnagar is finally termite-free, said officials on Monday.
The tree popularly known as Pillalamarri is 800 years old and spread over 3.5 acre. The government first took note of the giant tree's plight in 2017 after one of its branches collapsed.
On Monday, tourism minister V Srinivas Goud and Rajya Sabha Santosh Kumar visited the tree and climbed its branches, to indicate its sturdiness.
Kumar pledged 2 crore from his MPLADS fund for taking up other activities around the tree to protect it.
Taking to Twitter, he shared a few images and said, "An amazing day as I visited the great Pillalamarri, along with minister Srinivas Goud garu."
