Driver shortages make the case for digitising road freight

The survival of fleet operators in challenging market conditions will depend on maximising their drivers’ time on the road. By Will Girling

In 2021, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) recorded an 80,000 driver deficit in the US, a crushing number for a country where 72% of cargo utilises road freight operations. The situation prompted ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello to declare the shortage is “as bad as it has ever been.” A similar situation is also playing out in the UK (between 70,000 and 100,000 deficit) and across the EU (400,000 deficit).
