Mumbai News Live, Mumbai Rains Today Live Updates, September 14, 2022: A political firestorm erupted in Maharashtra after a joint venture of mining conglomerate Vedanta and Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn, which had held talks with the state to set up its new semiconductor plant, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government Tuesday to locate its project there. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the MoU “an important step accelerating India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions. This will also create a huge ecosystem for ancillary industries and help our MSMEs”. The Vedanta-Foxconn MoU with Gujarat left Maharashtra officials stunned and the Opposition slammed the Eknath Shinde government over the “missed” opportunity. Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackerey said the MVA government had brought conversations on setting up the facility in the state to the “final stage”.
Meanwhile, rainfall resumed in Mumbai last week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for parts of the city, Thane and Palghar on all days till Thursday, indicating that heavy rain at isolated places is very likely. Rainfall in Mumbai over the week is due to the depression forming over South Odisha which will gradually move in the West Northwest direction, Skymet also said in its statement.
In other news, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Tuesday announced that 227 free healthcare centres will be set up in the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai. The initiative will begin from October 2 with the launch of 50 centres.
Vedanta has partnered with Foxconn through a 60:40 joint venture to set up an integrated display and semiconductor fabrication ecosystem. Maharashtra was confident on getting the project after advanced stages of discussions between the JV and state leadership.

Maharashtra Leader of Opposition and NCP leader Ajit Pawar wrote to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday alleging that the Vedanta-Foxconn project is likely to have shifted to Gujarat under “political pressure”. In his letter, Pawar asked Shinde to continue efforts to bring the project back to Maharashtra. "This is an effort to financially deprive Maharashtra,” he said.
The Opposition has alleged that the Maharashtra government buckled under pressure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hails from Gujarat, and handed over the project, eyeing the upcoming Gujarat Assembly polls. "The state government must take steps as required but ensure that the project does not go out of Maharashtra," Ajit Pawar said.
The city law enforcement agency captioned their post, “‘Junoon’ & ‘Raftar’ can put your ‘Universe’ at risk. Driving safe is the biggest ‘Astra’ forever”. A former BJP minister requesting anonymity said, 'On January 6, 2020, the then Industrial Minister in MVA government Subash Desai had publicly announced that Foxconn had decided to withdraw its investment commitment of Rs 35,000 cr or $ 5 billion from Maharashtra. Desai had then cited that Foxconn was pulling out of Maharashtra due to its internal problems".
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis has put the blame on the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. He said, "It was during his tenure in 2015 when MoU with Foxconn was signed. However, MVA government failed to retain Foxconn in the last two and half years. So, MVA should explain why Maharashtra has lost the project."
Former Industrial Minister Subash Desai who worked in Shiv Sena- BJP alliance and MVA said, " Gujarat was never in the race for Foxconn. Maharashtra was among the front contender. The other two were Telengana and Karnataka. So, where has Gujarat come into the picture?"

Union minister Dr Bhagwat Karad has demanded that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recommend extension of the Marathwada Development Board to Governor B S Koshyari. The board had been formed for the development of the backward Marathwada region.

On basis of these reports, the state plans distribution of funds for the region. Therefore, an extension should be given to it, Karad said in the letter. (PTI)
