KOLKATA: Known for his flashy lifestyle, fluent English, a lavish car and multiple high-end cell phones,
Aamir Khan (24) had an almost opposite image of that of his father and other family members, who always maintained a low profile in the Garden Reach neighbourhood.
A day after stacks of currency notes wrapped in plastic bags were recovered from under a bed in Khan’s three-storey house at Shahi Astabal on Garden Reach Road during ED’s 16-hour raid, the residents of the area were still in awe on Sunday. They were seen sharing the videos of eight machines counting notes (Rs 2,000, Rs 500, Rs 200 and Rs 100) as well as of 10 steel trunks, in which the seized money was taken away by the officials. These videos have gone viral on social media, creating a sensation in the area.
“Aamir was always different from the rest of the family. While his parents used to haggle with grocers and rickshaw-pullers over petty change, his brothers and sisters used to go to the market around noon to get vegetables at a cheaper rate. They also wore ordinary clothes. But
Aamir was different. He had a lavish lifestyle and hardly interacted with anyone in the neighbourhood,” said Mina Das, who lives in the building next to Aamir’s.
“His father was a man of limited knowledge but he is a very respectable businessman in the transport sector. They have been into transport business for four decades. While none of the sons showed any interest in the family business, Aamir used to move around in his father’s SUV, till he bought his own car recently,” said Syed Sabir Ali, a local.
Locals said, Aamir’s lifestyle had shot up over the last two years when he bought a new SUV and also a new flat in New Town
On Sunday, Aamir’s parents and some other family members were still at home but none of them came out even as many visitors flocked around their house and knocked on its iron door.
