Families fear the waterlogged streets act as a breeding ground and give rise to vector borne diseases
GURUGRAM: Families in Orris Carnation have had to live with overflowing wastewater for years, but the Municipal Corporation of Manesar’s decision earlier this year to sanction a Rs 1.25 crore drain gave them hope that the problem won’t last long. Work started sometime in June, already three months late, and it now appears to have come to a standstill, the residents said on Sunday.
“After struggling and raising concerns on all possible platforms to get rid of dirty water on the road for years, we saw a ray of hope when work for the drain and sewer line finally started. But it is being carried out at snail’s pace and seems to have stopped midway now,” said Ashish Kumar Gupta, a resident of Sector 85 society. Others said the construction work was going on without any supervision.
“With water getting accumulated, it’s impossible to identify the dug-up area, which leads to frequent accidents. Moreover, the accumulated water and sludge is entering our society now and has made our lives hell,” said Satinder Bhatia, a resident of the society.
“Many cars and motorcycles have gotten stuck in the pits. We urge the district administration to intervene and expedite the work. More than 1,200 families have been struggling for years,” added Pankaj Arora, a resident. Families also fear the waterlogged street was a health hazard, acting as a breeding ground for mosquitoes in the dengue season. “We are heading towards an outbreak of vector borne diseases because of this sewage water.
Construction work began later, and with this pace, we don’t believe it will be completed anytime soon. MCM needs to prioritise this before any mishap,” said Dhruv Kapoor, a resident. MCM officials said there was a delay in starting the work due to land demarcation. “But it is being executed on time. We are trying to complete the drainage and sewage work till Orris Carnation within 15 days, and the rest of it in the sector will be done by October end,” a senior official said.
