PRAYAGRAJ: The Allahabad high court on Monday fixed September 28 as the next date of hearing in a case pertaining to the Gyanvapi issue of Varanasi.
The petitioner, Anjuman Intezamia Masajid, the Gyanvapi mosque management committee — of Varanasi and others, have filed this petition challenging the maintainability of an original suit filed in 1991 in the Varanasi district court.
The original suit sought the restoration of the ancient Kashi Vishwanath Temple at the site where the Gyanvapi mosque currently stood. The petitioners claimed in the suit that the mosque was a part of the temple.
The order was passed by Justice Prakash Padia after hearing the parties concerned.
The high court had on September 9, 2021, stayed the Varanasi court’s order dated April 8, 2021, by which a direction was issued to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a physical survey at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple-Gyanvapi Mosque complex.
Subsequently, on August 30, 2022, the high court had extended this interim stay till September 30, 2022 on a Varanasi court order.
