Brace for stormy session of Karnataka legislature from September 12

BENGALURU:  As the 12-day monsoon session of the Karnataka legislature begins on Monday, the principal opposition party, Congress, is all set to corner the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government by taking up various issues, especially the 40 per cent commission as alleged by the contractors’ association. 

The opposition will also raise corruption at the education department while renewing the recognition to private schools as alleged by the Recognised Unaided Private Schools Association (RUPSA) and PSI recruitment, RTO registration and KPTCL recruitment scams.

Communally sensitive issues, including the murder of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru and tit-for-tat killings of two youth from the minority community in the coastal region,  are also likely to come up in the Houses. Opposition leaders, especially Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah, may question CM Basavaraj Bommai as to why he visited only Nettaru’s house, while ignoring families of the other two victims, sources said. 

Siddaramaiah may seek information on cases dropped against activists during the BJP government. The opposition will take up the issue of nearly 100 of the 162 APMCs being on the verge of closure with their annual turnover going below Rs 5 crore. 

Will tackle issues Oppn raises: Minister

The major point of discussion will be the flooding of ITBT corridors in Bengaluru last week and that of Mysuru- Bengaluru highway a few days ago. JDS Magadi MLA A Manjunath had alleged that the project has been executed unscientifically and it involves a Rs 800 crore scam.

“We had tried to raise the issue in the previous session during the question hour, but the Speaker managed to stop us,” he had said. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister JC Madhu Swamy said the government is prepared to tackle any issue raised by the opposition.

“If they cross their limit, we will also raise the issue of corruption during the Congress party government led by Siddaramaiah,” he added. Bommai had earlier said that a bill to set up a separate authority to manage Bengaluru traffic, as advised by Union Roads and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, will be introduced. Another seven to eight bills are also likely to be tabled.
