Maharashtra: Woman raped on pretext of marriage

PUNE: The Hinjewadi police on Saturday registered a case against a man, who claimed to be from Goa, on the charge of raping a woman engineer with whom he got acquainted through a matrimonial website.
The woman, a techie, also stated in her complaint that the man also duped her of Rs10 lakh.
Assistant inspector CM Borkar of the Hinjewadi police said the complainant had registered her name on a matrimonial website. "In May this year, the man contacted her and introduced himself as a businessman and proposed to the techie for marriage," said Borkar.
According to the complainant, the suspect raped her thrice in a hotel in Hinjewadi on the promise of marriage. "The man also gained the confidence of the parents of the woman. He told the woman he needed money for his business and requested her to lend him money. He promised her he would return money immediately," Borkar added.
The officer said the woman transferred Rs12.75 lakh to another woman, who posed as the suspect's mother. "The man returned only Rs2.75 lakh to the victim and duped her of Rs10 lakh," said Borkar.
