Bhubaneswar: Cyber criminals used the photograph of director general (fire services) Santosh Upadhyay in the display photo of an unknown WhatsApp number and sent messages to his contacts, asking for money. However, nobody fell into the trap. “I have alerted the cyber police station about the fraud. I request everyone not to entertain such fake messages,” Upadhyay said.
In July, cyber crooks had created a fake WhatsApp account in the name of chief secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra and unsuccessfully tried to con his colleagues into paying money.
Recently, a number of fake WhatsApp accounts have surfaced in the names of development commissioner Pradeep Jena, Berhampur municipal corporation commissioner J Sonal, Ganjam district collector Dibya Jyoti Parida, Cuttack collector Bhabani Shankar Chayani and chief minister’s chief advisor R Balakrishnan. So far, the state police are yet to nail the culprits.
