Ludhiana: Two weeks after civic officials got sampling done at various locations on Buddha Nullah, results have not been declared. City residents and activists who campaigned against pollution in the nullah demanded that the civic body make these reports public. However, officials said they are yet to receive the report and that they would release it as and when they got it. Superintending engineer, MC operation and maintenance cell, Rajinder Singh said, “We got sampling done from a Mohali lab and it’s a long process to give reports. We are waiting for the report and it is expected next week."
On August 26, a team of MC officials filled samples from various points at the drain, including outlets of three common effluent treatment plants (CETP) meant to treat dyeing units’ waste and two sewage treatment plants at Bhattian. Sampling was also conducted at the premises of a few industrial units as officials claimed they were releasing untreated water into the MC sewer line. According to officials, sampling was done to check the pollution level in the drain despite taking all measures.
An activist, Kuldeep Khaira said, “Although the industry has started treatment of their waste water with the help of common effluent treatment plants (CETP) but certain doubts are being raised on the treated effluent. Industrial discharge coming to MC sewer line is yet another issue.” He said they would come to know of the situation only after the report was made public.
