VARANASI: As many as seven agricultural plots of over Rs 58 lakhs value of jailed mafia don and BSP MP from Ghosi Atul Rai were attached by a joint of police from Varanasi Commissionerate, Ghazipur and also local administration in Virpur village of Bhanvarkole area of Ghazipur district on Sunday
Commissioner of police A Satish Ganesh said that the order for confiscation of Rai’s property under Gangster Act had been issued by him on Saturday.
"To execute the same order a team of Varanasi commissionerate cops reached Ghazipur. The team of district administration and police of Ghazipur also joined them after which they reached Virpur village and completed the legal formalities of attachment of seven plots in the name of Rai. Estimate value as per circle rate of the attached plots is Rs 58 lakhs", said CP.
Rai, who is currently lodged at Naini Jail of Prayagraj, is in jail since June 22, 2019 after he surrendered before the court following winning Lok Sabha election as absconder as a girl had lodged an FIR against him on April 26, 2019 with Lanka police in Varanasi accusing him of raping her repeatedly and threatening to make video of the act viral on social media.
As per police records 21 criminal cases are lodged against Rai, who is registered as active member of Sujit Belwa gang and his criminal history sheet number is 27A at Manduadih police station. He had already been booked under Gangster Act twice in 2009 and again two times in 2011. Police had booked him under Gangster Act for one more time in October 2021.
The girl, who lodged rape case against Rai, had died after committing self-immolation with prime witness in her case near the Supreme Court in New Delhi on August 17, 2021 after levelling serious allegations on the police and other authorities. Rai was acquitted by a Varanasi court on August 6 in this rape case.
