NASHIK: Torrential rain in parts of Nashik district, including city areas, claimed five lives on Thursday night.
Two people died in a wall collapse incident in Vanjarwadi village of Sinnnar taluka, while a cyclist was electrocuted when he came into contact with a street light pole on the waterlogged street in the Mumbai Naka area. Two others were swept away in strong river currents.
Nashik city recorded 76.8 mm rainfall between 5.30 pm to 9 pm, causing waterlogging across the city. Other parts of the district like Trimbakeshwar, Igatpuri and parts of Sinnar talukas also received heavy rain.
According to Bhagwat Doifode, the resident deputy collector of Nashik, in the Vanjarwadi village of Sinnar taluka, two people were killed when the wall of the house they were sleeping in collapsed at around 3.00 am on Thursday.
The victims have been identified as Chhabu Sitaram Gawari and Mandabai Chhabu Gawari. Both were farm workers and lived with their four children - three daughters and one son. While the three girls were left unharmed, the boy, who was the youngest of all, was injured.
In another incident, a youth riding bicycle was electrocuted when he came in contact with the street light pole. There was an electricity leak and the current was flowing through the pole. The heavy rainfall resulted in waterlogging and the victim, Bablu Khan, came in contact with the 'live' wire, after which he was electrocuted.
Meanwhile, the police have recovered two dead bodies in Nashik city. Jugnu Shankar Jachack (47), a resident of Nashik Road, had left the house for using the toilet on Thursday but did not return. His body was found on Friday in the Darna river.
Similarly, the Adgaon police have found a body at a weir in Eklahara that is yet to be claimed. The locals found the body of an about 35-year-old male on Friday morning.
