GURUGRAM: A 27-year-old delivery agent died after colliding into a parked truck that he couldn’t spot on a road without streetlights in the early hours of Saturday near DLF 1.
The truck, which was parked under a tree, did not have its indicator lights on either, giving no advance notice of its presence to the bike rider, who sustained fatal injuries as he rammed into the back of the truck. The truck driver has been booked and is on the run, police said.
The victim, Narender Singh, and a relative, Jeevan Singh, worked together as delivery executives. They were headed from Galleria market towards DLF 1 for a delivery on separate motorbikes, with Jeevan trailing behind Narender, when the accident happened around 2am on Saturday.
According to Jeevan, Narender collided with the parked truck a few hundred metres from the Sector 28 MLA flats.
Jeevan told police there were no reflector lights on the truck and it was pitch dark as the stretch has no streetlights, because of which the accident took place. “Narender was ahead of me on his Splendor. The truck was parked on the road without the reflector parking lights or any indicators on, due to which Narender couldn’t see the truck and collided with it,” Jeevan told police.
Jeevan took Narender to Max Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during the treatment.
The truck was seized by police later. Police said the duo, originally from Alwar, came to Gurgaon three months ago. Narender is survived by his wife and two children.
On the basis of Jeevan’s complaint, an FIR was registered against the truck driver on Saturday at Sector 29 police station under sections 283 (danger and obstruction in public way or line of navigation) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
“The victim was not driving on the wrong side. The road is one-way during the day, but after 11pm, it is two-way. The truck driver should have kept reflector lights or indicators on. The truck was parked beneath a tree and so Narender couldn’t see it. The truck driver is absconding,” a senior police officer said.
