LUDHIANA: Two persons sustained injuries when part of an under construction building collapsed on an adjoining building at Jawahar Nagar camp area on Saturday.
The incident took place when work was being done on the building. A 12-year-old boy and his 45-year-old father, who were in the adjoining building on which part of the structure fell, were injured.
A mason was working on the second floor of the building when the newly-laid roof collapsed all of a sudden. Daksh, 12 and his father Kaka, 45 were injured. They were rushed to hospital, where Daksh got stitches. They are stated to be out of danger.
As soon as the incident took place, police reached the spot and rescued people inside the house. Onlookers were made to vacate the area to prevent any untoward incident.
MC officials also reached the spot. A show-cause notice was issued to building inspector for his negligence as the building was being constructed without permission from the civic body. The building inspector has been told to bring on record if he ever issued a notice to the owner of the building. Departmental action will be taken against him if he failed to do so.
According to MC officials, the total area of the building was only 33 square yards and the floor was being constructed illegally as it cannot be constructed in this area. Officials also said that on checking, they found that the base of the building was old and unsafe. Officials said that the under construction structure was of poor quality.
Jawahar Nagar camp area has been in news for illegal construction works. A few years ago, the MC had conducted a massive demolition drive in the area on the directions of
Punjab and Haryana High Court. Gradually, the illegal structures mushroomed again.
