Margao: Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Friday said that Margao was “crumbling” and stressed on the need for reversal of the situation. He said he would be at the forefront to do what was needed for the town’s advancement.
“The heritage value of Margao is collapsing. The commercial capital is crumbling. These aren’t good signs. This needs to be reversed. And for the reversal to happen, what’s needed is unity and the blessings of God. I will take the lead and do what needs to be done to strengthen Margao,” Sardesai said.
Although he made the statement at a function held at the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandal, Pimpalkatta, observers have found it to be politically loaded. Sardesai, along with Margao legislator Digambar Kamat holds sway over the Margao Municipal Council (MMC).
The election to elect the new chairperson of MMC is likely to be held next week, and though it’s Kamat’s turn to nominate his person for the top slot this time in accordance with the unwritten terms governing the civic alliance, there appear to be differences within the ruling coalition over the issue. Though Sardesai didn’t make any reference to Kamat, his open criticism over the state of the town right on Kamat’s own turf, and his assurance to “take the lead” in reversing the situation is being seen among political circles as a politically bold statement.
Sardesai also said Ganeshotsav mandals in Goa should be accorded government recognition and assured to raise the issue in the House.
