Gujarat: Man who killed niece hangs to death in lock-up

VADODARA: The man, who had allegedly killed his niece by beheading her, committed suicide in the lockup of Devgadh Baria police station in Dahod district on Saturday.
It is alleged that the accused Jayanti Rathwa was having an affair with the victim.
Rathwa, 40, was arrested and remanded in police custody on Friday. Devgadh Baria police sub-inspector N J Panchal said that the body was found hanging early on Saturday in the lockup. Panchal said that Rathwa had used a strip cut from a blanket to hang himself from a thick nail in the wall of the lockup.
The body was sent for an autopsy and an inquiry is being conducted regarding the incident.
The decapitated body was found by a forest department worker on Wednesday and the head was found at some distance. She had gone missing a couple of days from a relative's home before the murder. There were injury marks on the face too.
The police took the body for an autopsy and registered a murder offence regarding the incident at the Sagtala police station.
Investigations revealed that the woman had an affair with Rathwa, who is the husband of a distant cousin of the victim's mother. He initially denied killing the woman, but broke down later and confessed.
The woman had an affair with another youth which left Rathwa fuming.
