A 19-year-old undergraduate student who went missing from her house in Hyderabad's Rajendranagar on September 5 was found dead in Khilla Ghanpur of Telangana’s Wanaparthy district, allegedly killed by an acquaintance. The girl was allegedly strangled to death and buried by 23-year-old Srisailam after she refused his proposal to marry him. A resident of NGOS colony of Katedan in Rajendranagar, the girl had been reported missing by her family on the night of September 5. Her family had lodged a complaint with the Mailardevpally police saying she hadn’t returned home after leaving home for college that morning.

Mailardevpally Inspector of Police Narasimha told the media that after receiving the complaint, based on information given by her father, Srisailam was identified as a suspect. “We went to his native place Manajipet, took him into custody and interrogated him. We found that he and the girl were acquainted before. On September 5, he came from his village and picked her up from the Boothpur bus stand. He took her to a farm and asked her to marry him. When she refused, he got upset and strangled her with her dupatta, according to his confession,” the Inspector said. According to reports, the girl had plans to go abroad for higher studies.

Along with Srisailam, police have reportedly arrested his relative Shiva for assisting him in burying the body. A few local residents tried to attack the two men when police took them to the scene of the crime. According to the police, Srisailam had called the girl and insisted that she go to his native place in Wanaparthy's Manajipet. He picked her up from Bhootpur and took her to a farm in Manajipet to talk, Inspector Narasimha said. “He asked her to marry him and she refused. He confessed to strangling her in anger,” he said. Srisailam then allegedly buried her body with his relative Shiva’s help, by digging a pit near a canal. While some reports speculated that she may have been sexually assaulted before her death, police said they are awaiting the postmortem report to confirm the allegation.
