In other top city news of the day, a Delhi court recently convicted AAP MLAs Akhilesh Pati Tripathi and Sanjeev Jha after they were found guilty of being part of a mob which attacked policemen at Burari police station in 2015. As per the prosecution’s case, on February 20, 2015, the MLAs were part of a mob which assaulted several policemen of Burari police station over allegations that they did not take action in a kidnapping case.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) staged a sit-in protest in the campus, raising several issues including 'delay' in scholarship disbursal, problems related to infrastructure and 'discrepancies' in PhD prospectus, a statement by the students' body said on Monday.
The union said many requests were made to the vice chancellor's office for an appointment to discuss pertinent issues within the campus premises. 'Earlier, the administration responded to one of our demands by providing a detailed reply on the hostel-to-hostel expenditure. However, the progress in addressing the infrastructure issues in the university is far from satisfactory and more funds are required for maintenance of hostels, academic buildings and making the campus more disabled-friendly,' statement said.
The JNUSU further alleged that the administration has 'failed' to provide concrete updates regarding issues in library, functioning of ICC in the campus, or conducting an access-audit of the campus. The students' body said there have been violation of reservation policies in the hostel allotment process for the batch of 2022. 'The JNUSU will continue with the sit-in protest until all its demands are met,' the statement said. (PTI)
The national capital reported 63 new COVID-19 cases and one related death in the last 24 hours, taking the city's total caseload to 20,01,769 and death toll to 26,494, according to a Delhi government health bulletin published on Monday.
A total of 3,434 COVID-19 tests were conducted over the last 24 hours and the tesy positivity rate (TPR) was found to be 1.83 per cent. As many as 27,354 beneficiaries were administered the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday.
With recent incidents of pitbulls having attacked people, including children in Delhi-NCR, the breed is increasingly being abandoned by pet owners.
Geeta Seshamani, co-founder, Friendicoes, an organisation that helps find homes for abandoned pets, works with street dogs, and runs a shelter in Delhi, said, “We had a spate of abandonments, up to five a week, soon after the Lucknow episode. Even now, there’s a relentless flood of requests to take in pitbulls or Bully Kuttas rescued in bad shape.” In July, a pet American Pit Bull Terrier attacked an 82-year-old woman in Lucknow, and she eventually succumbed to her injuries. As many as 67 colleges, 79 undergraduate programmes, 206 different BA programme combinations, around 5,000 possible programme-college combinations and potentially 6.14 lakh aspirants — the Common Seat Allocation System for (CUET) admissions will be no small task for Delhi University.
Because of the novelty of the process, while the university opened registrations on Monday, it has not issued a definite timeline or date list for the rest of the process. Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said the aim is to start the academic year for newly admitted students on November 1, which is a tight deadline given the many steps and processes ahead in the admission process. The Sonepat police have initiated inquest proceedings after a second-year BBA (Hons) student of OP Jindal Global University was found dead outside the campus on Sunday.
Police identified the student as 19-year-old Sanskaar Chaturvedi, a resident of Vadodara in Gujarat.
They said his sister teaches at the University.Vipin Kadian, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Sonepat’s Rai village, said: “The student had gone to visit his sister in Delhi. His body was found outside the university on Sunday. The body did not have any visible injuries. We have initiated inquest proceedings under CrPC section 174. The cause of death will be known after the post-mortem report is received. The family has filed a complaint and a probe has been initiated.” Read more

The Delhi High Court has imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on a lawyer who wanted the court to issue directions to the Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate for disclosure of the officers who allegedly harassed private liquor vendors in the national capital.
The division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad termed the public interest litigation a “sheer abuse of the process of law” and asked the petitioner, Narinder Khanna, to pay Rs 1 lakh fine to the Army War Windows fund within 30 days.
The court said that Khanna has placed the liquor policy on record and raised “all kinds of wild allegations against” the Delhi LG, CBI and ED based upon the statements of third persons, including the Deputy CM, MLAs and newspaper clippings. Read more

Police alleged the members of the mob demanded that the accused persons in the case be handed over to them so they may take action. After their request was denied, the mob assaulted policemen on duty.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Vaibhav Mehta convicted Model Town MLA Tripathi, Burari MLA Jha and other accused person after concluding that they sloganeered and instigated a mob that had attacked personnel on September 7. Read more

A 25-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed by her neighbour in southwest Delhi's Sagarpur for abusing his mother, officials said on Monday.
Sunil, 40, has been booked for attempt to murder and arrested, the officials said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Manoj C said, "Our enquiry revealed that the victim, a resident of Nasirpur, was injured after she was attacked with a kitchen knife by her neigbhour Sunil. During the scuffle, the accused was under the influence of alcohol."
The accused alleged the woman had abused his mother which angered him, he said. The victim has sustained injuries on the neck and cheek and is undergoing treatment at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, the DCP said, adding her condition is stated to be stable. (PTI)

Directing the Disciplinary Authority to issue a fresh order of punishment against a police officer who was charged with the abdication of duty and misconduct during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Delhi High Court Monday said the nation was still bleeding and the age will not help the retired officer.
The division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad said innocent people lost their lives during the 1984 riots and serious charges have been levelled against the petitioner Durga Prasad, the then station house officer (SHO) of Kingsway Camp police station.
“He may be 100. Kindly see the misconduct. Innocent people lost their lives. The nation is still bleeding. On that ground [of age] you cannot get away. Age will not help,” said the court, after the petitioner’s counsel submitted that he is now 79 years old. Read more

Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez has requested the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police to postpone her questioning on Monday, pointing out that she has some pre-scheduled shoots, the police said. The actor had been summoned in connection with the Rs 200 crore extortion case filed against alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar and this is the second time that Jacqueline has requested the investigation team to postpone it citing prior commitments, officers said. Sukesh had allegedly extorted Rs 200 crore from the wife of former Fortis Healthcare promoter Shivinder Singh.
Special CP (Crime and EOW) Ravindra Singh Yadav said they summoned four to five people, including actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Nora Fatehi in connection with the probe. “Investigation is going on to ascertain all the links, (and whether) people involved in the main conspiracy and people who accepted gifts were aware of his background or not,” he said. The Delhi High Court Monday stayed the proceedings initiated by Lokpal of India against JMM president and Rajya Sabha MP Shibu Soren on the basis of a complaint alleging he has amassed huge wealth and assets by “adopting unscrupulous and corrupt means” in Jharkhand.
Justice Yashwant Varma said the matter requires consideration and till the next date of listing, there shall be a “stay of further proceedings pending before” the Lokpal. The court listed the matter for hearing on December 14. Read more

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday launched search operations at over 50 locations across the country in connection with cases involving Punjab gangs and their nexus with terror groups. Sources said the raids are spread across Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and some other states on premises associated with gang members and some terror suspects.
The raids come a day after Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, during a press conference on the Sidhu Moosewala murder case, pointed to nexus between Punjab gangs and terror groups operating from Pakistan. Read more
With 319 lakh metric tonnes of annual milk production, Uttar Pradesh's top milk producer in the country, said CM Yogi Adityanath, while attending the inauguration of the International Diary Federation’s World Diary Summit 2022 at the India Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida.
Delhi University announced that in its first round of applications, 20% of extra seats will be allocated to unreserved seats, and 30% extra for reserved seats. Around 70,000 UG seats are available across programmes this year, it said. DU has 79 UG programmes and 206 different BA programme combinations in 2022.
Though the timeline has not been finalized, DU VC said that the university would ideally like to conduct the first round of allocations by October 10.
