JNUSU stages sit-in over various demands

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) staged a sit-in protest in the campus, raising several issues including 'delay' in scholarship disbursal, problems related to infrastructure and 'discrepancies' in PhD prospectus, a statement by the students' body said on Monday.

The union said many requests were made to the vice chancellor's office for an appointment to discuss pertinent issues within the campus premises. 'Earlier, the administration responded to one of our demands by providing a detailed reply on the hostel-to-hostel expenditure. However, the progress in addressing the infrastructure issues in the university is far from satisfactory and more funds are required for maintenance of hostels, academic buildings and making the campus more disabled-friendly,'  statement said.

The JNUSU further alleged that the administration has 'failed' to provide concrete updates regarding issues in library, functioning of ICC in the campus, or conducting an access-audit of the campus. The students' body said there have been violation of reservation policies in the hostel allotment process for the batch of 2022. 'The JNUSU will continue with the sit-in protest until all its demands are met,' the statement said. (PTI)

How Delhi was destroyed and rebuilt after the revolt of 1857

September 1857 can well be recalled as the end of an era in Delhi. The flickering flame of the Mughal empire and culture in the city had been snuffed out. After nearly five months of a frenetic rebellion by Indian sepoys, the British troops finally managed to advance into the city through the gutted ruins of their own bungalows in Civil Lines, and on the morning of September 11 they made the final assault on Kashmiri Gate. The biggest resistance took place here.

The city once known for its resplendent culture of mushairas and poets would be reduced to one strewn with bodies of the dead. From a royal capital, its status was relegated to that of a provincial town. The city recovered itself only after 1911 and more so after Independence. The biggest resistance took place here.

As it coincided with a solar eclipse, many of the more superstitious Hindu sepoys among the mutineers stayed in and took it as a sign of the end of the conflict. With no opposition in sight, the British soldiers walked in with ease and thereafter took over the Mughal capital and changed the course of its history forever. Delhi had fallen and was declared captured on September 21. Adrija Roychowdhury writes
