Jamshedpur: A city-based non-profit organization has joined hands with the East Singhbhum administration to create awareness against suicide and encourage people to reach out for help if they are going through depression. The NGO will put up hoardings in 70 locations across the city.
“We have identified public places, such as police stations, post office, banks, bus terminus and healthcare centres, for installing the awareness boards,” Dr Jeoraj Jain, director of Jeevan, said.
The hoardings will contain helpline numbers of the organization, besides messages appealing to people not to take the extreme step.
“Suicide cases are on the rise because people lack the general awareness on where and whom to contact for counselling,” Dr Jain added.
Jamshedpur and Mango Notified Area Committees have offered to install the hoardings for free.
As per records provided by the East Singhbhum administration, 128 people have died by suicide in Jamshedpur between January and August this year. Of them, 36 were women while 92 men. “Marital discord, financial woes, mental stress, depression and the pandemic were a few of the reasons behind these suicides,” Dr Jain said.
Last year, 255 people died by suicide in the city.
