BHUBANESWAR: Light to moderate rain lashed most places across the state on Saturday. Several south Odisha pockets also received showers in the past 24 hours under the influence of Thursday’s low pressure area, which has now intensified into a well-marked weather system, said IMD report on Saturday.
Mahendragarh and Gosani in Gajapati district recorded the state’s highest of 117 mm and 102 mm rainfall, respectively during the period, the IMD rainfall report said. Similarly, Malkangiri received 49mm rain by Saturday evening. The capital recorded only 3 mm.
The IMD has forecast that the system would intensify into depression in the next 24 hours. It said orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall would continue in Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh and Bargarh districts.
The yellow warning of heavy rain would also continue in some more districts on Sunday and continue till Tuesday. On Sunday, this warning would continue in Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Angul, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, , Koraput, Gajapati, Deogarh, Puri, Khordha and Cuttack districts.
Umashankar Das , scientist of IMD, regional centre said, rainfall activity under the influence of the system would reduce gradually by Wednesday.
IMD in its bulletin further cautioned that heavy rain chances may trigger landslides/mudslides in vulnerable hilly areas. There is also possibility of temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas, the IMD bulletin said.
