Coimbatore: A group of residents of Karumathampatti and members of various political parties on Saturday demonstrated against a plan to reopen a Tasmac liquor outlet near the Karumathapatti-Somanur stretch. The protesters held placards and raised slogans against the move and said it would have a negative effect on their lives.
V Ganesha Moorthy, state general secretary of Congress, said the district administration closed the Tasmac outlet in the area four years ago following a series of protests. “There were attempt to reopen the outlet in June itself, but opposition from residents thwarted it. Again officials are planning to reopen the outlet. They have been stocking liquor bottles.”
Another protester, Su Palanisamy, said the locality is surrounded by educational institutions and healthcare facilities. TNN
