COIMBATORE: A world record was set by more than 5,000 school and college students in Coimbatore on Saturday, on the occasion of the World First Aid Day, by demonstrating basic life support and recovery positions during critical conditions. The Asia Book of Records adjudged the record attempt held on the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) campus.
It was conducted by Coimbatore district administration with Alert, an NGO.
District collector G S Sameeran said 5,386 government school and college students and students from 49 private institutions had taken part in the world record attempt where they demonstrated basic life support and training.
He said the aim was to encourage the students to save the life of patients in critical conditions by demonstrating basic life support to them.

The collector said all 5,386 students took a pledge against the use of narcotic substances as part of the state-wide initiative launched by the government. "Apart from the world record attempt, the pledge by the students against the use of drugs is also considered an achievement to make a drug-free society on lines with the vision of chief minister M K Stalin," Sameeran added.
