Ganesh Visarjan 2022: 20 die during Ganpati immersion across Maharashtra

"20 people lost their lives in various incidents related to Ganpati immersion. 14 people died by drowning," said the Maharashtra police.

At least 14 persons have died due to drowning in different cities in Maharashtra during the Ganpati immersion processions on Friday, the police sources informed on Saturday. The police also stated that instances of clashes between groups, electrocution, fracas between police and people were reported as well. Total 20 deaths were recorded in separate instances during the Ganesh procession across the state, police claimed.

According to the police, in Wardha district, three persons had died due to drowning at Sawangi, while another person died due to drowning at Devli. In Yavatmal, two persons had drowned in a pond during the immersion of an idol. In Ahmednagar, two persons drowned in separate incidents at Supa and Belvandi.

In Jalgaon, two instances of death due to drowning were reported each from Chalisgaon and Jamner. One incident each of drowning deaths was reported from Dhule, Lonikand in Satara, Vijapur Naka in Solapur and Ghodegaon in Pune rural, the police said. One person in Yavat in Pune after falling from a wall.

In other separate instances related to the Ganesh immersions, four persons died in a road accident at Sakkardara area of Nagpur. In Thane, a woman was killed and four others injured after a tree collapsed on a Ganesh pandal due to heavy rains on Friday night.

Meanwhile, at least 11 persons, including a nine-month-old child, who were part of a procession were injured after suffering an electric shock at Panvel in Raigad district during a procession. The incident took place on Friday evening at Vadghar Koliwada after a cable of an electric generator snapped.

Some incidents related to law and order situations were also reported in parts of the state during the immersion. A scuffle broke out between the supporters of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray at Tophkhana in Ahmednagar district, an official said.

In Jalgaon, a group of people hurled stones at the mayor's bungalow during the Ganesh immersion procession, while a clash broke out between two groups at Mundhwa in Pune city. A brawl occurred at Shikrapur in Pune district over bursting firecrackers, while in Chandrapur, a fracas was reported between Ganesh mandal volunteers and police personnel, the police said.
