Mumbai bids farewell to Lord Ganesha, over 38,000 idols immersed

MUMBAI: The 10-day festivities of Ganeshotsav came to an end on Friday, as the city bid goodbye to its favourite deity.
Over 38,000 Ganesh idols were immersed till about 9am on Saturday, of which around 25 per cent were done at artificial sites created by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
As per BMC’s data, of the 38,214 total immersions, 31,259 were of household Ganesh idols and 6,647 were from Sarvajanik pandals.
Of the total, 9,751 idols were immersed at artificial sites on Friday, while 8,873 were household idols, 796 idols were Sarvajanik idols. No untoward incident was reported on Friday.
The BMC had made arrangements for immersions at 73 locations, and it had also created 162 artificial sites for the immersion of idols.
The civic had also planned for the collection of idols in some wards.
Heavy police deployment was witnessed at immersion sites.
Ganesh immersions were carried out at Girgaum Chowpatty, Shivaji Park, Juhu, Malad, among other places.
Visarjan was also permitted at Gateway of India after three years.
