JAIPUR: Rajasthan stood third in terms of scripting the highest number of success stories in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The state has secured 8.3% share of the total 9,93,069 qualified students in the country.
The majority of these qualified students are from government schools affiliated with the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE). Also, the impact of coaching hubs in Kota and Jaipur cannot be ruled out for the spectacular show.
The desert state has 1,17,099 students who appeared in the examination, while 82,548 students qualified for the examination. The record 70% success rate here is the highest in the country.
Dr Bharat Saran, who is posted as a medical officer at the district hospital in Barmer, runs Fifty Villager Sewa Sansthan (FVSS) has all his appeared 51 students from RBSE-affiliated government schools have cleared the examination. "All these students are from economically poor backgrounds with their parents involved as daily wage earners and farmers. However, only 14 of them are getting government colleges while others will not be able to continue due to unimaginable fees of private medical colleges," said elated Saran who is also disappointed at the same time.
The group brings students after Class X and picks them based on their aptitude for medical and Class X scores. "The RBSE textbooks are among the best in the country is a reason that not only NEET but also in JEE, state government school students feature in top 5 in the country," said Saran.
The figure is likely to go high in the coming years as the state is making major changes in curriculum as per the New Education Policy devised by Rajasthan State Council of Educational Research & Training, Udaipur.
TOI called education minister B D Kalla and additional chief secretary Pawan Goyal for their comments on the changing curriculum and syllabus but get no response. "The content is being developed keeping in mind national levels competitive exams like IITs, NEET, Olympiads, KVPY or NTSE," said Kamlendra Singh Ranawat, spokesperson, RSIERT.
The success of RBSE students is rising and since NCERT textbooks have been in place, the success is going to rise further. Rahul Muwal, who studied at RBSE affiliated school in Todhi, Malpura Tehsil in Tonk scored 7693 is set to get into a government medical college and owes his success to his teachers and books.
Tonk collector Chinmayee Gopal has launched a programme 'Mission Lakshya Sadhna' by providing free books on NEET and JEE worth up to Rs 1 lakh in some selected schools. The schools' teachers are interested in students' post-school hours aiming to help students clear the exam who could not afford to coach.
Girdhar Singh, principal, government senior secondary school, Malpura, Tonk says that they have started free coaching post-school hours. "The programme has received a great response as 30 students have enrolled for it, mostly girls. The initial report indicates that we will be scripting history. The icing on the cake is our best faculties are teaching them," said Singh.
