VARANASI: The last rites of Prof SK Shankar, Emeritus professor of Neuropathology and former director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore were performed on the banks of the Ganga in Varanasi on Thursday. Prof Shankar left for heavenly abode on September 5 after 38 years of distinguished services to NIMHANS.
The last rites were arranged by his student Dr VN Mishra of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, and his team. “His dedication, passion and contribution for neuroscience will always live on in our memories,” said Dr Mishra, adding that Prof Shankar was a legend in the field of neuropathology and established the discipline in the country. As a researcher in the field of neuroscience his contributions are enormous. He was a revered teacher and highly respected by all his colleagues and students of all disciplines, he said.
Prof. Shankar was a pioneer in biobanking and established the first and the only Brain Bank in India, at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, to support research in neuroscience in the country, said Dr Mishra adding, he is rightfully considered as the father of Brain Banking in India. He himself donated his brain, eyes and heart for the cause of research and teaching and established the only Neuropathology Brain Museum in the country .
