Canacona: Following public outcry, the accident-prone road crossing at Colsor-Galgibaga on the Manohar Parrikar Canacona bypass has been closed for works to prevent mishaps.
In the three years since the commissioning of the road there have been 15 accidents at the spot, which resulted in two deaths besides leaving several injured.
Road contractor M Venkata Rao Infra Project Pvt Ltd is erecting a 22m-long road divider near the Hotel Matashri at Colsar-Galgibaga under the supervision of the PWD (Highways).
PWD (Highway) junior engineer Nagraj Adpaikar who is supervising the works said that the contractor is bearing the construction costs.
MVR, which has constructed the nearly 8km four lane expressway from Char-Rasta to Mashem, will carry out the maintenance works for four years.
Sources said that the original drawings of the expressway had no provision for a road crossing. However, one was made near Hotel Matoshree, which eventually led to the spot becoming accident prone.
