COIMBATORE: Three college students drowned after a pickup van they were travelling in plunged into a well near Thondamuthur in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu on Friday morning.
Fire and rescue services personnel retrieved the bodies of V Adarsh, 18, Ravi, 18, and Nandanan, 18.
The accident happened near Thennamanallur Mariamman temple around 6.30am when M Roshan, 18, and his friends Adarsh, Ravi, Nandanan were returning to Vadavalli after celebrating Onam in a club on the Coimbatore-Siruvani Main Road on Thursday night. After the celebrations, they stayed in the club and left in the morning.
According to police, Roshan drove the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner. He lost control of the pickup van. The vehicle rammed the gate of a farmland and plunged into a 120-foot- deep well. There was more than 80 feet of water in the well. Roshan managed to come out of the vehicle and escaped. However, his friends drowned.
The Thondamuthur police and fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot. A crane was brought to lift the van from the well.
