‘Repeated requests for cops on campus fell on deaf ears’

Ranchi: Miscreants entering Doranda College and harassing students or even faculty members is nothing new, according to the college authorities. Several memorandums asking for preventive measures have been sent to the district police by the management, but nothing was done.
Talking on the issue, principal B P Verma said, “A few months ago we had appealed to cops to set up a police picket in the college premises to keep a check on anti-social elements but the officials turned down the request, saying that it was not viable strategically.”
He added that after making several requests to the SP, DSP and officer-in-charge of the local police station, three police constables were deployed at the college in January but they were withdrawn after three days.
“A woman constable who is stationed within the premises at present is hardly able to handle the miscreants,” Verma said.
“Miscreants often enter the premises despite objections raised by the guards and try to misbehave with the girls. They have threatened some of our faculty members as well,” Verma added.
Though the college has set up an internal security mechanism, it becomes ineffective in the face of attacks by miscreants who have also served jail terms.
When asked, Ranchi SSP Kishore Kaushal said, “It is unfortunate that a teacher has been beaten up. We would enhance security around the college premises. Given our staff strength, it is difficult to keep a police team deployed in the campus 24/7.”
