The Goa government had began demolishing on Friday morning the controversial restaurant at Anjuna in North Goa linked to the death of Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sonali Phogat for violating the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, an official said.
The shack, which was touted to be “untouchable due to its owner Edwin Nunes's reported well connections with BJP”, had a brush with the law in 2017 when the then chief minister Manohar Parrikar had him arrested after a waiter was found to be in possession of drugs on the establishment’s premises.
Director general of police Jaspal Singh had told TOI that Phogat had visited the shack on the night of August 22, when she complained of uneasiness, and had later left for her hotel room.
The politician was declared ‘brought dead’ by a private hospital at Anjuna on August 23 morning.
The NGT had said that Curlies had extended itself far beyond the original structure that existed prior to 1991.
Curlies has been in the news most recently in connection with the death of BJP functionary and TikTok star Sonali Phogat, with one of the owners, Edwin, being among the four people arrested.
He is currently out on conditional bail.
The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) had earlier ordered the demolition of Curlies, which Linet had challenged before the NGT.
