PANAJI: After heavy rainfall lashed parts of the state on Wednesday, the India meteorological department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for September 9 and 10 owing to the increase in rainfall over Goa.
Tourists have therefore been warned against venturing into the seas while fishermen have been alerted to drop the anchor owing to windspeed conditions.
On Wednesday, rain gauge stations in Mormugao, Pernem and
Panaji recorded the highest 24 rainfall up to 8.30am, with 89.6mm, 88.6mm and 80mm of rainfall respectively.
“Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over central parts of Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area has formed over Westcentral and adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. It is very likely to become more marked over Westcentral and adjoining Northwest
Bay of Bengal off north Andhra
Pradesh ¬South Odisha coasts during next 48 hours,” the IMD said.
In addition to this, a trough runs from south Konkan to the low pressure area over Westcentral and adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal across North Interior Karnataka, south Telangana and north Coastal Andhra Pradesh at 0.9 km above mean sea level. The trough forms a cyclonic circulation over central parts of Bay of Bengal to north Kerala now seen as a shear zone.
Also, a cyclonic circulation lies over Coastal Karnataka and neighbourhood areas between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level.
All of these factors have played in for the increase in monsoon activity over the Goa coast, as a result.
