KOLKATA: A 65-year-old woman died after allegedly being assaulted by her relatives at her Debendra Chandra Dey Road home in Tangra on Wednesday night. The victim, Geeta Mondal, had a dispute with the family of her niece living in the same area. Cops have detained some of her kin in connection with the death of the woman.
Locals claimed that the two families had a dispute over a small land in Tangra. Around 8pm on Wednesday, a quarrel broke out between them. After some time the woman was found injured. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead around 9pm.
"We have detained some of her relatives in this regard. We are waiting for the primary post-mortem report that will ascertain the exact cause of her death. The post-mortem report will make it clear whether she was hit with sticks or was pushed. Based on the findings, we will arrest the accused," said DC (ESD) Priyabrata Das.
Cops said the victim's daughter has lodged a complaint against the accused. Neighbours informed the police about the incident. "The altercation turned into fisticuffs between the two families. After the woman's death, we registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. We are questioning the victim's relatives," said Das.
Though cops have denied any political connection with the incident, the victim's daughter claimed that she and her mother had been threatened with the name of a Trinamool leader. However, Trinamool sources refuted the claim. The victim's family denied having any link with any political party.
