Mandya: A day-old baby girl, who was being carried by a pack of dogs in ward 7, close to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), was rescued by the public on Wednesday.
Though she was taken to MIMS for treatment, it didn’t survive, doctors said. The newborn sustained dog bites all over her body. After the public noticed the dogs carrying the baby, they alerted MIMS staff, and jointly rescued the baby.
According to the MIMS records, four newborns, including three boys and a girl, died on Tuesday at the hospital, and their bodies were buried by their parents. The mother of this baby girl may have dumped her near MIMS, in the adjacent ward 7, soon after giving birth to her, and the dogs carried away the baby later, sources said.
MIMS director Dr Mahendra Kumar confirmed that the baby was not born in MIMS. It is suspected that her mother abandoned the newborn for reasons best known to her, he said.
A complaint has been lodged at the Mandya West police station in this regard, and an investigation is on.
