KANPUR: A PhD student of IIT-Kanpur allegedly hanged himself to death in his hostel room late Tuesday evening. No suicide note was found in the room. He was a resident of Varanasi.
The incident came to light at 8.30 pm on Tuesday when the Hall 8 room of the student, Prashant Singh, was found locked from inside and knocks by his friends were not answered.
In a statement, the institute said that when the the door was forcibly opened, they found Prashant hanging from the ceiling with the help of a bedsheet. He was rushed to the health centre of the Institute, where the on-call physician pronounced him dead. The institute said that Prashant's family members and the police were informed about the incident. The police have seized Prashant's phone and laptop.
Prashant's body was taken to the mortuary of LLR Hospital where, after the postmortem, it was handed over to his parents.
The Institute is awaiting the police investigation to determine the likely reason behind his suicide. Prashant was a student in the department of Mechanical Engineering with outstanding academic qualifications. He had enrolled himself at IIT-Kanpur in 2019 to work for his master's degree before deciding to enrol in a PhD programme (course) in 2021.
While expressing sorrow, IIT-Kanpur said that with his passing, the Institute lost a talented student and an aspiring scientist.
