LLB student gets zero when others given grace marks

Surat: Amit Chovatiya (name changed) completed LLB earlier this year and based on his marksheet, he got ‘Sanad’ - licence to practise law and admission to LLM. However, after six months, he came to know that he had failed in one subject in the fifth semester. While he had earlier got 56 marks, he got zero in the revised results.
When he enquired with Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU), he was told that he had been caught by the supervisor in the class and images of the question paper were found in the image gallery. He was asked to write an undertaking for his mistake and it said that he could get zero marks if held guilty by the VNSGU committee for code of conduct.
“I was relieved when I got 56 marks and thought that the university did not hold me guilty. But I was awarded zero when the results of around 1,200 students were revised,” said Chovatiya.
Following multiple appeals and RTI applications by LLB students raising concerns about wrong questions and answers in the MCQ format of fifth semester exam, VNSGU agreed to give grace marks for wrong questions. The university revised the marksheets of around 1,200 students after the fifth semester result, and these students have now got their LLB final results.
Based on the final results, these students took ‘Sanad’ and admission in further studies. But due to the revision in the marks, the students will now have to submit fresh results at the institutions where they have taken admission.
“I was told by VNSGU officials that I got zero as I was caught adopting unfair means in an exam. But they could not explain why I was cleared earlier and given 56 marks,” said the student.
“I am not aware of the issue. If the student approaches the university we can find out what went wrong,” said A V Dhaduk, controller of exam, VNSGU.
