COIMBATORE: A one-and-a-half-month-old female calf was killed by a leopard near Karamadai in Coimbatore district of
Tamil Nadu on Thursday morning.
Forest department officials visited the spot and found pugmarks of a leopard. They decided to fix five camera traps in the locality.
The calf belonged to B Krishnasamy, 60, of Muthukallur. Krishnasamy owned an agricultural field located 100 metre away from the boundary of the reserve forest. He was rearing three cows and a calf in a cowshed in the agricultural field.
Around 6am on Thursday, Krishnasamy went to his agricultural field and heard the mooing of the calf. He found a leopard running away.
The calf died as it suffered injuries on its neck and back in the leopard attack. The farmer informed the Karamadai forest officials.
A veterinary doctor performed a postmortem on the carcass.
Forest range officer N Divya said, “We are going to fix five camera traps in and around the agricultural field to track the leopard. If we find the movement of the leopard in the locality, we will place a cage to capture it.”
T K Ashok Kumar, district forest officer (DFO), Coimbatore forest division, said a team had been deployed in the locality to closely monitor the area.
