KARAIKAL: Karaikal town police inspector J Sivakumar was placed under suspension pending inquiry for failing to initiate action on a complaint lodged by a woman against her brother-in-law accusing him of sending obscene photos to her.
Puducherry DGP Manoj Kumar Lal issued an order on Wednesday placing Sivakumar under suspension after Mayiladuthurai all-woman police in Tamil Nadu registered a case against her brother-in-law identified as A Haja Kamaludeen and Kamaludeen's friend M I Mohammed Farook, who claimed to be a journalist in Karaikal.
In her complaint lodged with the Mayiladuthurai superintendent of police and the deputy superintendent of police, the woman said she along with her sister approached Karaikal town police in Puducherry Union territory on August 18 to lodge a complaint against Kamaludeen for sending obscene photos to her mobile.
She said inspector Sivakumar had summoned Kamaludeen for inquiries. Kamaludeen came to the police station with Farook, who claimed to be a journalist, and managed to convince the inspector not to register a case as the complaint does not reside in the station's jurisdictional limits, following which the inspector did not register a case.
The SP and the DSP directed the Mayiladuthurai all-woman police to register a case and commence a probe following her complaint.
The police booked Kamaludeen and Farook under sections 354 (assault of criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 109 (punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment), 294 (b) (obscene acts and songs) and 506 (1) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 66 (E) (punishment for violation of privacy) and Section 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act and began inquiries.
