The United States has alleged that Russian President Vladimir Putin is weaponising energy, a day after he threatened to cut off all energy exports to the West if the White House proceeded with its gas cap.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday threatened to completely cut energy supplies to the West if it tries to cap the prices of Russian exports. He also intended to press on with Moscow's military action in Ukraine until it achieves its goals.
Karine Jean-Pierre, Press Secretary, White House said on Wednesday during her daily news conference that this shows that Putin is, again, weaponising energy, by his words, and actions. But President Joe Biden and our partners in Europe predicted this playbook. We have talked through the different processes of how this price cap could look.
She also said that the US and European Union, have set up a task force to work on ways to find alternate sources of natural gas for Europe and help reduce Europe's demand for Russian energy through clean energy deployment and increased efficiency.
As they head into the winter months, we're going to continue to do to be helpful to Europe. But this initiative of the task force already has had a positive effect as we've seen. She guessed that Europe's gas shortage will be filled by the critical winter heating season.
Despite the Russian cuts, Germany will reach their target gas storage, ahead of schedule. And Europe collectively will reach a significantly higher level than earlier year, Karine said.
