NEW DELHI: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has asked e-commerce companies to refrain from selling the “cheat device” — Seat Belt Alarm Stopper Clips — on their platforms since these infringe in the enforcement of traffic rules and compromise with the “class of consumers”. The CCPA has also sought responses on the sale of these products on their platforms.
The CCPA had sent these notices in May soon after the road transport and highways ministry wrote to the consumer affairs ministry that such products were being sold through online platforms. After checking that the items were available online, it hadsent the notices. Sources said barring one, all e-commerce companies have submitted their responses and these are being studied. They added if there is a need the matter will be taken up for further investigation.
TOI on April 6 had first reported about the transport ministry seekingban on the sale of car seat buckle alarm stoppers by e-commerce companies citing that manufacture and sale of such items are illegal under the Central Motor Vehicle Act.
The buckles work as replicas of the actual car seat-belt buckle to stop the alarm sound. These are still available on some e-commerce platforms.
