Dharwad: Incessant rain over the past three days having wreaked havoc with the infrastructure in the low-lying areas of the twin cities, mayor Iresh Anchatageri on Wednesday, accompanied by officials from the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), visited the localities that had borne the brunt of inclement weather, and lent an ear to the residents’ grievances.
The residents did not hold back in venting their ire at the condition of the roads, which, despite repeated pleas from them for years together, were awaiting repair. Pointing to the slush-ridden roads, they said that commute was practically impossible. On the other hand, residents of the new layouts in Kumareshwar Nagar, and Alagawadi, complained about the lack of streetlights, besides the failure of the authorities to ensure regular collection of waste, which had left them messy.
The residents of the new layouts said that, with door-to-door collection of waste having been impacted in the aftermath of heavy showers, people from neighbouring localities had taken to dumping their waste in their area. Consequently, this has turned their localities into a den for pigs The mayor, on hearing these complaints, directed the officials to clean the localities, and to closely monitor collection of garbage.
Anchatageri assured the aggrieved residents of disbursing, immediately, a sum of Rs 20 lakh towards repair of roads, and installation of streetlights. “The HDMC Council has decided to hold the next general body meeting in Dharwad, and many pressing problems of the residents of the city will be discussed, and solutions proposed,” he said.
