MUMBAI: The iconic Haji Ali Dargah is planning to erect the world's tallest flagpole and hoist the national flag on it. The Dargah which is currently undergoing renovation will invite PM Narendra Modi to unveil the flagpole.
The work on it will start soon, said Haji Ali Dargah trustee Sohail Khandwani. Currently a flagpole in Cairo (Egypt) at the height of 201.952 metres, is the tallest in the world. Till December 2021, the tallest flag in the world was in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) which stood at 171 metres.
"I had discussed it with Devendra Fadnavisji when he was chief minister (2014-2019) and he had liked the idea of hoisting India's national flag at the world's tallest flagpole on the premises of Haji Ali Dargah. On Wednesday, I reminded him of the Dargah's plan for the tallest flagpole and he approved it," said Khandwani.
He added that several agencies will be roped in to complete this mammoth project as huge logistics will be required since the flagpole will be erected at the Dargah premises surrounded by the sea. Located on an islet off the coast and accessed by a paved pathway, Haji Ali is among the holiest shrines and also a popular tourist sites in the city.
