SRINAGAR: Downtown
Srinagar, which had come to be known to be an epicentre of terrorism and a hub of stone-pelters over the years, had now shed its past and emerged as the “new address of India’s sporting heroes”, J&K Lt-Governor Manoj Sinha said on Wednesday after inaugurating an indoor stadium in the neighbourhood.
Amid the cheers of thousands of locals, Sinha said several youngsters from downtown Srinagar had proved their mettle in national championships and recounted the names of some players who had recently represented the UT at sports events. “The day is not far when we will see the youth of Shahr-e-Khas representing the country in
Olympics and earning a new identity of heroes and respect for J&K and the country,” he said.
Appreciating the growing sports culture and the dedicaton of the youth to acheive glory in the field, the L-G said it reflected in the remarkable revolution in different sports disciplines. Determination of the downtown youth to see the tricolor fly high had revived the legacy of football and other games in J&K, he added.
The L-G said his administration was taking all possible steps to ensure that the players got better infrastructure that could help them earn a champion’s tag. He appreciated the
Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council for preparing and handing over the Ellahi Bagh indoor sports stadium in record time.
